on Family CampingThoughts on Family Camping
Camping is becoming an increasingly popular way for families to spend their holidays. Budget
friendly, camping allows families freedom to pick and choose their destinations, holiday on their own timetable and
most of all, enjoy the great outdoors. Learning life skills, getting away from the stress of day to day duties and
taking time away from technology, camping allows families to bond, relax, exercise and enjoy the simpler things in
life.
Choosing your destination is very important and thanks to the popularity of camping, families
will find that facilities for campers have greatly improved. Amongst the most popular destinations in the UK you
will find Blackberry Wood, East Sussex, which is set in a fabulous woodland. Bosworth Water Trust in Warwickshire,
which is ideal for those who want to add sailing to their list of holiday activities and Bay View Farm in Cornwall,
which is near a fishing village and offers the most breathtaking hilltop Cornish coast views. Costs for pitching a
tent vary at each location, if possible phone ahead to check prices and availability.
Wherever you choose to go camping you must make sure you have all the right equipment. Whilst
you may want to avoid packing everything and the kitchen sink on your family camping trip, there are certainly some
essentials that you cannot be without to make sure your family camping experience is a good one.
Essential camping items include:
Bedding; Sleeping bags are a good place to start, but for extra insulation and comfort consider
an air mattress. Do not forget pillows, air pump and an air bed repair kit!
Cooking; Make sure you bring water jugs, buckets, ice coolers, a thermos, lighters, matches,
fire starters, saucepans, a tin opener, mugs, zip lock bags, tinfoil, cutlery and bowls, kitchen roll and washing
liquid.
Personal Items; Toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, flannels, towels, plates and any
medication or toiletries you require.
Clothing; Weather can be changeable when camping so ensure you have waterproofs and warm
clothing with you at all times. Dress in layers for added protection from the elements.
Other Items; Other items which will be very useful include a compass or GPS system, flashlight,
mobile phone, dehydration sachets, water sterilising tablets, extra blankets, extra water and of course, a first
aid kit.
Knowing which tent to choose when embarking upon a family camping trip is also something worth
investing some time in. If you have your own transport then bigger really is better. The only draw back being
that the camp site may charge you a little extra. Spacious family tents with separate rooms offer a degree of
comfort, privacy and much needed additional storage space. So, although your initial outlay may be slightly
higher, it is worth `up sizing` for the additional benefits.
Choose a tent that sleeps from three upto twelve people, bearing in mind the golden rule of
always adding `+1` more than you intend to actually sleep in it! This allows for basic room to swing a cat. Ensure
your tent is of good quality and has a Hydrostatic Head measurement of at least 2000mm; This will mean that despite
the British weathers efforts to soak you in a downpour, you and your supplies and family will stay dry!
